Muscat, Oman, 2 November 2009 – Nine chefs from major hotel properties in the sultanate were recently named as winners of the first-ever professional Chefs’ Competition, which was held on October 26-28 as part of the Food & Hotel Oman 2009 exhibition.

Organised by Omanexpo LLC in partnership with the Oman Chefs Guild, the Chefs’ Competition attracted the participation of 62 chefs competing in three categories: Three-Tier Wedding Cake, Five-Course Gourmet Dinner, and Live Fruit and Vegetable Carving. The competition was mainly sponsored by Salman Hotel and Restaurant Equipment LLC, with the Oman Tourism College and Barakat Quality Plus as co-sponsors.

“The Chefs’ Competition added great value to Food & Hotel Oman 2009 and, on behalf of the organisers, I would like to congratulate all winners who stood out with their exceptional skills and creativity,” said Nasser Diab, general manager of Omanexpo LLC, the leading organiser of trade shows in the sultanate.

For the “Three-Tier Wedding Cake” category, first place went to Welliwitiya Kongahge Lahiru Abishek De Silva of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, while Nishanta Upul Kumara of Al Nahda Resort & Spa grabbed second place, and Shalitha Ptiyantha Samarawickrama of the Crowne Plaza Hotel took third place.

The first prize winner in the “Five-Course Gourmet Dinner” category was Sebastian Arnold of Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa, while Jamal Al Balushi and Anuraj Nair, both of whom represented Al Bustan Palace Hotel, bagged the second and third prizes, respectively.

In the “Live Fruit & Vegetable Carving” category, Abeywickrama of Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa took home the top prize, while the second and third positions respectively went to Puthiya Veetil Damodaran of the Crowne Plaza Hotel and Dilip Dey of Oman Hotels & Tourism (Al Falaj Hotel).

“We are highly encouraged by the active participation of many chefs as well as the strong interest of the public in the competition,” said O.S. Thomas, honorary secretary of the Oman Chefs Guild. “We now plan to make the competition even bigger and more exciting next time.”

All the winners of the Chefs’ Competition received trophies, certificates of merit, and gift certificates courtesy of the Salman Hotel and Restaurant Equipment LLC. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges made up of Chef Marcus Gregs, Chef Babu Khan, and Chef Shankar Kotian, all of whom are vice presidents of the Emirates Culinary Guild. In addition to the top three winners in each category, the judges also gave gold awards, silver awards, bronze awards and merit awards to all deserving participants, based on the total points they received.

Food & Hotel Oman 2009 highlights growth of food and hospitality sector
Muscat, Oman, 26 October 2009 – Food & Hotel Oman 2009 was formally inaugurated today at the Oman International Exhibition Centre, with over 90 local and international exhibitors showcasing a wide range of products and equipment for the sultanate’s vibrant food and hospitality sector.

His Excellency Ahmed bin Sulaiman Al Maimani, Undersecretary for Administrative, Financial and Estates Affairs at the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, presided over the inauguration ceremony in the presence of other ministry officials, members of the diplomatic corps, the top management of participating companies, and other distinguished guests.

Organised by Omanexpo LLC, Food & Hotel Oman 2009 will run until October 28 and it is open to trade visitors from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm and then from 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. On display in the international exhibition are various types of food products, the latest kitchen appliances and catering equipment, hotel supplies, food processing equipment, packaging products, hospitality technologies, as well as agricultural products and equipment.

Omanexpo to organise three major exhibitions this month
Muscat, Oman, 15 October 2009 – Omanexpo LLC, the leading organiser of professional trade shows in the sultanate, has lined up three major international exhibitions this month to cater to the growing requirements of Oman’s vibrant health and medical sector, the food and hospitality industries, as well as companies dealing in women’s products and services.

Chefs’ Competition to be held at Food & Hotel Oman 2009
Muscat, Oman, 7 September 2009 The Oman Chefs Guild, a professional organization made up of chefs from major hotels and the hospitality industry in the sultanate, will be holding a competition for chefs at the upcoming Food & Hotel Oman 2009 exhibition this October.

The competition is organized in partnership with Omanexpo LLC, which is the organizer of Food & Hotel Oman 2009, and with the support of Salman Hotel & Restaurant Equipment LLC, which serves as the sponsor of the competition.

“This exciting competition, which is an excellent opportunity for chefs here in Oman to showcase their talent, creativity and skill,” said O.S. The competition is open to everyone representing the food production industry and will be mainly participated in by chefs from different hotel properties, restaurants, and bakeries in the sultanate. There will be three categories for the competition, which are as follows: (a) The Best Wedding Cake on the 26th of October, (b) Five-Course Meal on the 27th of October, and c) Live Fruit and Vegetable Carvings on the 28th of October.
